He enlisted in Plattsburg, New York on September 2, 1864 and was mustered into Company K, 2nd New York Veteran Cavalry - the "Empire Light Cavalry". This command was mostly composed of men who had prior service in the 30th New York Infantry.

Private Merritt, who is also found as Merett, was mustered out in Talladega, New York on August 23, 1865.
