William H. Hunt was born in 1857 in New Orleans. He was the son of William Hunt, Secretary of the Navy and minister to Russia in the administration of President Garfield and Elizabeth Goodwin (1825-1864). He graduated from Yale University in 1878 and began his practice of law in Montana. In 1881 he was collector of customs from Montana and Idaho. In 1882, he married Gertrude Upshur of Brooklyn, New York. From 1885 to 1887 he was Attorney General of Montana. In 1889 he was a member of the Montana Legislature. From 1889 to 1894 he was judge of the First Judicial District of Montana. From 1894 to 1900 he was a justice of the Montana Supreme Court. In 1901 President Theodore Roosevelt appointed his Governor of Puerto Rico, a position he held until 1904 when he was appointed United States District Judge for the district of Montana. He became an associate judge of the United States Court of Customs Appeals. In December 1910, he became judge of the Ninth United States Circuit Court of Appeals in California. He died at the age of 91 years on Friday, February 3, 1949 in Charlottesville, Virginia after a short illness. He had lived in Charlottesville since he retired in 1941. He was survived by three daughters, Mrs. Edward (Elizabeth) Tayloe, of Shadwell, Virginia; Mrs. Hunt (Gertrude) Knox of the District of Columbia and Mrs. Barnaby (Helen) Conrad of Santa Barbara, California and one son, William, H. Hunt Jr. of California. Services were held at St. Paul’s Memorial Church in Charlottesville. Interment was in Oak Hill Cemetery in Georgetown, District of Columbia.
