William B. Shuford, one of North Carolina’s best known industrialists and a former state senator, died in a Hickory hospital Saturday, August 12, 1967.
The 60 year old Shuford was vice president for manufacturing at Shuford Mills in Hickory. The Shuford family has long been prominent in the industrial and business life of this area.
A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of North Carolina, he served on the UNC board of trustees for eight years and for many years was a member of the group which selected winners of Morehead Foundation scholarships at the university.
Shuford served the old 25th district in the State Senate for three terms, 1953, 1957 and 1961, and later held posts in textile trade organizations.
Survivors include his widow, the former Miss Virginia Jones of Charlotte; three sons, William B. Shuford, Jr., Frank J. Shuford and Charles H. Shuford; a daughter, Mrs. Tucker Yates; and two brothers, A. Alex Shuford and Harley F. Shuford.
Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Sunday, August 13, 1967 at Corinth United Church of Christ.
