John B. Pope was a first selectman of the Town of Oxford and also represented the town in the State Legislature. He also served as a member of the Board of Relief.

Pope was born in Roxbury, CT on July 13, 1842, his family coming to Oxford when he was one year old. He was educated in the public schools of Oxford and became a farm worker at the age of nineteen. In 1865 he married Jane M. Nichols. Together they had eleven children, including a son, Charles Pope, who later served as first selectman of Oxford.
