John Alfred Rains, 88, passed away on Sunday, July 18, 2010, Springfield, Illinois. He was born on September. 23, 1921 in Danville, to Matson and Mary Schuman Rains.

Mr. Rains served in the U.S. Navy as an airplane mechanic on the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Lexington during World War II. He was employed by Sears Paper Box Company as a commercial artist and later retired from the company. Mr. Rains was a longtime member of St. James Methodist Church, the American Legion Post 210 and the Blue Lodge Masonic organization.

Mr. Rains was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Virginia Lee Rains and a cousin, Joseph William "Joe" Schuman. Survivors include cousins, Dorothy Schuman Sager, Richard Schuman (Barbara), Jennifer Schuman Fry (Jimmy), Gene Miller (Marleen), Dorothy Rains Smith, Karen Vickers (John), Michael Sager (Nancy), Eileen Clutter Walderon and Bill Clutter (JoAnne).
