According to Confederate Military records, William D. Bowen was promoted to Ensign {Color Bearer} of the 16th Alabama Regiment in 1864. William carried the colors of the regiment at Franklin when the colors of the 16th Alabama were captured by members of the 104th Ohio Infantry.
