Adolph William Washburn, age 79, of 3611 Pine Place Rd., Eau Claire, Wis., went to be with his Lord and Savior on November 4, 2006, at his home.

Ade was born July 21, 1927, in Minneapolis, Minn., to Gorman and Josie (Anderson) Washburn. On August 13, 1955, he was united in marriage to Janice (Vold) Washburn.

Ade moved to Eau Claire at the age of 7 with his brother, Clifford, and sister, Irma. He attended Eau Claire High School where he was a gifted athlete, participating in basketball, football, baseball and track. In 1945 he received the Old Abe outstanding Athlete Award. Ade left high school early to serve his country in the United States Navy. He served for a little more than a year before he returned to attend UWEC.

Ade was a natural all-around athlete during his Blugold days, playing football and basketball all four years. He captained both the football and basketball teams his senior year. He was a member of the Blugold's conference championship football squad in 1948. Immediately following college, he played quarterback for the semi-pro Chippewa Marines. No matter where Ade went, someone seemed to stop him with a special memory of his sports accomplishments from that time.

Ade was a true teacher, with a teacher's heart. His first position was at Fall Creek High School, during which time he coached basketball and baseball and served as athletics director. From 1957 through 1973, he taught history and phy-ed at Stanley-Boyd High School, continuing his coaching career there. Ade left education in 1973 to pursue a career in real estate; but he never quit teaching. He was always ready to show his grandchildren a new move that would surely give them an edge. Sports were his passion. In recognition of Ade's athletic accomplishments, he was inducted into the Blugold Hall of Fame in 1986, and more recently, into the Eau Claire Old Abe Hall of Fame. Ade loved golfing with friends, the north woods and his musky fishing. He shared this passion with his children and grandchildren. A first class grandpa, the love he shared with "his boys" while fishing up north will be a blessing never to be forgotten.

Ade is survived by his wife, Jan; son, Steve (Cyndee) Washburn of Shorewood, Minn.; daughter, Cindy (Kelvin) Kling of Marshfield; three grandsons, Erik, Andrew and Peder Kling; and two step grandchildren, Nicole and Jon Lamb.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Clifford Washburn; and his sister, Irma Petrie.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, November 8, 2006, at Bethesda Lutheran Church, with Pastor Rodney Venberg officiating.

Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Lenmark-Gomsrud-Linn Funeral Home and one hour prior to services Wednesday at the church.

The family requests memorials be directed to UW-Eau Claire Foundation-Athletics, Schofield Hall 214, 1105 Garfield Ave., Eau Claire, WI 54701, or to the donor's choice.
