For most of Edythe's life it was commonly believed by her family that she was the seventh and youngest child of Christian George Pape, Sr., and Mary Catherine Vonderhaar Pape. It was only after the death of Mary Catherine Pape Piotrski (long believed to have been her sister ) that it became known that Mary Catherine was actually Edythe's mother and that her father was James Reeves of Partlow, Kentucky. Although James was her father, she was raised with and known by the last name of Pape.

On 01 May 1937 she married Avery Pharris. By 1946-47 the couple was divorced as Carons Louisville City Directory lists Avery as living with another wife, Elizabeth. At some later date she married Phillip Tenpound and eventually moved to Texas. She had one adopted daughter, Marcella.
