THOMPSON - Grace J. Thompson died peacefully of natural causes at Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan on Monday, April 19, 2010, with family members at her side. She was 89 years of age. Grace was born July 17, 1920, in Grand Rapids. Her parents were Claude Henry and Ella Daverman Henry. Grace graduated from Ottawa Hills High School in 1938 and received her R.N. from Butterworth Hospital in 1941. She met her future husband during her time at Butterworth. Grace and Dr. Edward C. Thompson were married in Flint, Michigan in 1942. Following her husband's naval service during World War II, Grace and Ed settled in East Grand Rapids where they proudly raised ten children. During her husband's career as an anesthesiologist, Grace's focus was her seven sons and three daughters at Thompsonville. Grace was a loving and supportive wife and mother throughout her life. Known for her ready smile and great warmth, she also had many close friendships. Grace and Ed retired in 1984, enjoying their winter residence in Marco Island, Florida. After her husband's death, Grace enjoyed living among friends at Cook Valley Estates. Her family and friends will miss her dearly. Grace is survived by her brother, Carl Henry; her ten children, twenty-three grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; as well as nephews and nieces. Her children (and spouses) are, Steve (Marilyn) Thompson, Craig (Deanna) Thompson, Michael (Suzanne DeVries) Thompson, Scott (Cheryl) Thompson, Douglas (Diane) Thompson, Gary Thompson, Richard (Tammy) Thompson, Janice (Joseph) Edwards, Linda Minnema, and Karen Thompson. Grace was predeceased by her husband of 58 years, Dr. Edward C. Thompson; her brother, Paul Henry; and her parents. The family will greet friends in a reception honoring her memory on Friday, July 30, 2010, 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at Cook Valley Estates, 1049 E Paris Ave. SE, Grand Rapids, Michigan.
