Col. Darden was born to Frances D Whittaker and Fred F Darden in California. He enlisted in the US Army 1952 and was commissioned in 1953. He was married to Christine Taranto in 1954 until her death in 1992 and in 1995 remarried to Grace Torrance. He and Christine had six children: Deborah, Diana, Fred, James, Mark, and Greg. He served Vietnam.
