Joel Warlick Wilkinson, Jr., 88 of Duncan, Oklahoma, died on Saturday, July 17, 2010, at Integris Baptist Medical Center in Oklahoma City.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, July 23rd at Don Grantham Funeral Home Chapel with the Dr. Brad McCoy officiating. Interment will follow at the Resthaven Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

He was born August 3, 1921 in Duncan, to Joel "Warlick" Wilkinson and Ruth Wilkinson. He married Marguirete "Wete" Wilkinson on Dec. 12, 1942.

Joel attended Oklahoma City University on a music scholarship for two years, served as a Crew Chief in the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII, and finished his education at the University of Oklahoma and played trumpet for The Pride of Oklahoma.

Joel started his career teaching band at Oklahoma City area schools and later joined his dad, Warlick, in the insurance and loan business for 37 years.

He served Duncan in many ways including President of the Chamber of Commerce, President of Rotary, President of Duncan Realtors Assoc., President of Oklahoma Professional Insurance Agents Assoc., and was a Charter Member of the Elks Golf & Country Club. Joel received the Distinguished Service Award and later was named Outstanding Senior Citizen by the Duncan Jaycees. He was a fundraiser of the Duncan Regional Hospital improvement and donated funds for two rooms. Joel also funded an endowment for the Cameron University Music Department honoring his wife Wete.

Joel played tennis into his 70s and his serve was feared by younger men. He was an avid fisherman and hunter, a world class skeet shooter scoring 100 straight in all four guns. He played trumpet in the Cameron Jazz Ensemble and played in the Chisholm Trail Community Band since its inception. Joel was a lifelong learner. He mastered the computer at age 80 and composed over 50 short stories. Joel played trumpet for the Oklahoma City Symphony, led the orchestra for the Civic Capers and Duncan Little Theatre. He continued playing trumpet and teaching Trumpet to students at no charge until his hospitalization. His resilient spirit and positive attitude will be sorely missed.

Joel was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 59 years, Wete in 2001 and a step granddaughter, Ashley Weaver in 2002. Survivors include his son, George Richard Wilkinson of Duncan and his two daughters, Whitney and Lauren of St. Augustine, Florida, and his son, Joel "Kent" Wilkinson and wife Monica Kim Wilkinson and their children, Dawson Wilkinson of Duncan and Alis, Daniel and Brandon Wilkinson of Dallas, Texas.

Pallbearers will be: Wes Wilkinson, E.J. Buckholts, David Lee Early, John Moots, Matthew Deeg and Wolfgang Deeg.

Honorary bearers are: Dr. Richard A. Ellis, Dr. George Howe and Hershel Higgins.
