Mrs. E. B. Schermerhorn, Wife of
Cherokee Countys Wealthiest Cit-
izen, Succumbs to Complications.

Mrs. Abbie Schermerhorn, one of the
most prominent women of Cherokee coun-
ty, died yesterday morning at 8 oclock at
her home on East Fifth street.

Mrs. Schermerhorn had been in ill
health about two years. In the summer
of 1913 she went to Battle Creek, Mich.,
for treatment, and after a few months
there she returned to Galena somewhat
improved. She became seriously ill about
two weeks ago, and grew worse rapidly
until her death, which was due to a com-
plication of diseases.

Mrs. Schermerhorn was born in Loraine,
O., and came to Galena about thirty-eight
years ago. In 1878 she was married to E.
B. Schermerhorn, who is president of the
Citizens bank here, and reputed to be
Cherokee countys wealthiest citizen.

Mrs. Schermerhorn was especially noted
for her work of charity among the poor.
Last Christmas she gave an elaborate din-
ner in the basement of the Sixth Street
Baptist church for the poor families of
the city. She was a charter member of
Amy chapter, O. E. S., and was grand
representative for the state of Georgia
at the grand chapter meeting in Topeka
last May. She also was a member of the
Methodist Episcopal church.

She is survived by her husband, one
sister, Mrs. Orpha Brannon, who resided
with her; one niece, Mrs. Budd M. Robin-
son, of Jopllin, and one nephew, Robert
Brannon, of Cleveland, O.

Funeral services will be held Sunday
afternoon at 2 oclock in the residence.
The ceremony will be performed by the
Rev. Frederick Maler and the services
will be in charge of the Eastern Star.
Burial will be in Mount Hope cemetery.
It will be an automobile cortege.

Abbie was the first entombed in the Schermerhorn Mausoleum. However obviously their mausoleum was not completed when Abbie passed as she was first entombed on 12/26/1915 in the Rogers Mausoleum & then removed and entombed in the Schermerhorn on 08/26/1916. My information shows that she had the disease "gastritis" and that she had a bronze casket. So apparently their mausoleum was constructed between 01/1916 & 08/1916.

three weeks she had been in poor
health more than a year. Death was
due to complication of diseases.

Mrs. Orpha Brown Brannon was
born in 1854 at Lorine, Ohio.

She came to Galena about twenty
years ago and has resided here a
greater part of that time. For a
number of years she made her home
with her sister, Mrs. E. B. Schermer-
horn, whose death occurred three years
ago last December.

Mrs. Brannon was a member of
St. Marys Episcopal church, an active
worker in the local Red Cross Society,
having had charge of one of the knit-
ting classes. She was also an inter-
ested and faithful member of the lo-
cal library club.

She is survived by one daughter,
Mrs. Budd Robinson of Joplin, and
one son, Robert Brannon who resides
in California.

Funeral services were held at 2:30
this afternoon from the Schermerhorn
residence, 805 East Fifth street, con-
ducted by Rev. Alexander Hawke of
Parsons, Interemtn (sic) was made in Mt.
Hope cemetery.

The pollbearers (sic) were: C. L. Saw-
yer, M. J. Pickett, A. S. Wilson, John
McCullagh, William Schmidt, and
Arthur Stone.
