John Alexander Riggs served as a soldier in Company F, 28th Maine Regiment Volunteers during the Civil War (War of the Rebellion). His unit took part in the successful Union defense of Fort Butler on the Mississippi River in Louisiana. On the night of June 28, 1863, these heavily out-numbered US troops repelled a dramatic attack by Rebel forces, thus saving the fort from capture. As the next day dawned, the American flag still flew over Fort Butler.
