Iowa State Senator, District 37. General Assembly: 28 (01/08/1900 - 01/12/1902). From the Iowa Legislature website: A new man in Iowa legislative work, but locally prominent in politics, and with an extensive business experience and reputation, is the senator from Hardin, Hamilton, and Wright, Hon. Joseph Wallace of Eldora. He is a native of Ireland, born in Tyrone county, in 1854. He has been a resident of this state thirty-six years, and closely affiliated with the best business interests of it. His marriage to Miss Florence Doty was consummated in 1878, and by them there are two children, a daughter of 18 and a son of 13. The daughter is a student of Cornell college. Senator Wallace is of the sturdy Scotch-Irish ancestry, and inherits all of the sterling worth of that people. He attended the public schools, working on a farm in vacations. At the age of 20 he began teaching, still pursuing his studies. At 22 he became principal of schools at Union, Iowa; two years later superintendent city schools at Waseca, Minn. Desiring to engage in other business, he returned to his old home and entered an occupation with which he had made himself familiar, farming and stock dealing. He is extensively engaged in stock raising, feeding, and farming, his interests extending into other states. Locally Senator Wallace has been honored with the best offices of his county, and has served as a member of the board of supervisors of Hardin county for six years, during which time an excellent court house was built. In every political contest he has entered he has run ahead of his ticket. He is an active man in his party, the republican. Senator Wallace is a member of the Methodist church.
