Muriel's parents were John Reginald Whittaker and Victoria Pascale Whittaker both from Nebraska. They homesteaded at Dry Lake where Muriel and her brother John Boice Whittaker were born. Muriel attended a one-room schoolhouse where her father was the teacher. She was graduated from Bend High School about 1933 and later Oregon State University at Corvallis. She was a high school business teacher in Springfield, Oregon for two years prior to her marriage in 1941 to Kent J Richens, an officer in the Army Air Corps, whom she had met at Oregon State. During their marriage they were stationed all over the US and after their divorce Muriel settled in California with her five children: Karen, John, Candice, Stephanie, and Rebecca. She was a teacher and counsellor in the San Mateo High School district for many years prior to her retirement. Later she was a family counselor and worked with AIDS patients. Muriel enjoyed duplicate bridge and was a Diamond Life Master.

There is no marker since Muriel donated her body to science. Her brother John Boice Whittaker is buried at Pilot Butte Cemetery in Bend, Oregon.
