Ernest Julius Staahl, 69, of 150 West William Street, 52 year employee of Corning Glass Works, died early this morning in the Reed Nursing Home at Bath following a lengthy illness.
Mr. Staahl was born October 19, 1886 in Jevnaker Hadeland, Norway, the son of Peter Elof and Julia Marie Johansen Staahl. He came to the United States with his parents.
Mr. Staahl was one of the older employees of Corning Glass Works. He began his career in his native Norway. In 1904 at the age of 18 he joined his brother Gustave at CGW as a mold holder. After a year with the company he was a gaffer on hand bulbs in B and C Factory, a post he held for 45 years. He retired November 1, 1951.
At the annual banquet of CGW in 1954, Mr. Staahl was the recipient of his 50 year pin and $1,000 check.
In his younger days Mr Staahl played the cornet in the former Corning Glass Works band. He was also affiliated with the Corning Glass Works Production Club.
He is survived by: his widow, the former Betty Svensson, whom he married May 19, 1913; one son, Joseph R. Staahl Jr., all of 150 William Street, and one sister, Mrs. Harry Kelly of 154 William Street.
Friends are invited to call this evening and Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 until 9 pm at the Phillips Funeral Home in Corning. Funeral services will be held there Wednesday at 11 am, the Rev. Clemen Brown, pastor of Bethany Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Coopers Plains Cemetery.
