James Herman Hughes, of Milledgeville, died Monday, January 28, 2002.

A native of Walker County, Mr. Hughes was a son of the late Glenn and Charlsie Owens Hughes.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Sue Canada Hughes, and a son, Jeffery Glenn Hughes.

Mr. Hughes owned and operated Hughes Nursery for a number of years before retirement. He was a veteran of World War II and was a member of Joy Baptist Church.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 30, in Evergreen Memorial Park with the Rev. George Palmer and Chris Carpenter officiating.

Survivors include sons, Gary Wayne Hughes, Hartwell, and James Michael Hughes, Watkinsville; sisters, Vera Palmer and Velma Byrd, LaFayette; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association, Corporate Square, Bldg. #1, Suite 127, Atlanta, GA 30329.

Bernstein Funeral Home, Athens, was in charge of arrangements.
