She is survived by her brother, Wade McCormick of Athens, Texas; her sister, Geneva Lee of Pearl; her son, Thomas William May, and girlfriend, T.A. Boyd; her daughters, Reba Faith Spencer and husband, Dwight, and Martha Joyce Ott and husband, Cliff.
Mrs. May has six grandchildren, all living, including Mariah "Wendy" Reed and husband, Tony, Veronica Martin and husband, Sean, Bobbye Hope Booth and husband, Richard "Fleet," Caitie Boatwright and husband, Jason, KEB (Kenneth Eugene Bowman) and wife, Terri, and Garret May; and six great-grandchildren, all living, including Courtney and Brittany Justice, Chris Dyer, Brett and Skyler Knight, and McKenzie Bowman.
She was a lifelong member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. She loved her church and her Sunday school class, the "Nell Smith class." Mrs. May was a proud member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, of which she was a charter member and regent from 1973-1977 of the Chloe Holt Chapter. She was an active member of Eager Elders, the Widows Club, the Piddler's Club and the 50+ Group.
Mrs. May was a housewife and mother before she completed her Master's degree in Elementary Education. She found it funny that in delaying her education to get married and have children that Daddy thought it was important to have her "MRS." degree. Being a determined, independent person she did however continue on in her forties to complete her education.
She taught at Southwest Mississippi Christian Academy, briefly at Brookhaven Academy, and completed her teaching career at Enterprise Attendance Center from which she retired in 1993. She taught third grade and often joked about never "getting out of third grade." She and Daddy started a "potpourri" business after retirement. This allowed them to travel and be with people and they made a great many new friends.
Visitation will be from 5 until 8 p.m. on Thursday, July 29, at Brookhaven Funeral Home on North Jackson Street in Brookhaven with visitation continuing at 1 p.m. there on Friday, July 30 until services at 2 p.m. Burial will be at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church following the service.
Friends and family are invited for a time of fellowship following the burial at Mrs. May's home.
Mrs. May loved her church, husband, life, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and friends and family. She will surely be missed by all. God bless you, mama!
