Born in Sulphur Rock, Arkansas
Lived in Independence Co., Arkansas until sometime
in the 1920's when they moved to Michigan.
He owned two markets. The first store was at 401 Carton St. (Corner of Carton/Buick). He and his son Elmer co managed this one. The other was Qualls Market at 1014 Walnut St in Flint, MI (bet Robert T Longway and Davison Rd) He and Cora (Tarpley) lived in a residence in the back of the store (1014 1/2) Years ago the store was torn down and the location is now the site of a church.
My mom is his granddaughter (daugher Margaret's daughter)and she spent time with them at the store.
Cora (Tarpley)and Russell were pretty different people. Cora attended church regularly, Russell didn't. According to my mom, he would smoke then suck on Clover mints to try to hide the smell from his wife. He couldn't read and my mom remembers him having his sister in law read the paper to him.
In 1956 his car was hit by a train. He spent a month in bed then had a heart attack and died. After he died Cora moved back to Arkansas and shared a home with her sister, Effie, I believe.
