Margaret Susanna Andrews, 89, a devoted Lindstrom resident for 63 years, died Oct. 1, 1990 at her home.
Margaret was born April 28, 1901 to Jacob and Mary Bringgold of Pine Island, Minnesota .She came to Lindstrom as a bride of Raymond G. Andrews on June 30, 1927.

She was preceded in death by her husband Raymond, daughter Virginia Louise 4 years,9 mo, son in law Robert Anderson and sister Marian Schafer.

Margaret is survived by daughters Mary Ellen Anderson, Fridley; Susan Margaret (Robert) Wilson, Lindstrom; her son Charles Bringgold (Mary) Andrews,Mpls; grandchildren Bob Anderson, Mary Beth (Todd) Neuman; Mark, Tom, Anne, Steve, and Susanna Wilson and Elizabeth, Katherine, Michael, Jane and Margaret Mary Andrews; niece Mary Jeanne (Robert) Erat, Mpls; nephews John (Jackie) Schafer, Birmingham;Michael and William (Natalie) Schafer, Redmond, Washington; cousins Irene Feske, Polly Andrews, Carolyn Sue Andrews, Donna (Carl) Larson, Helen Tangren, Lindstrom; other relatives and friends, all of whom she greatly cherished.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, Oct 6 at St. Bridget of Sweden Catholic Church, Lindstrom and interment was at Fairview Cemetery

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, Oct 6 at St. Bridget of Sweden Catholic Church, Lindstrom with Bishop Lawrence Walsh, Celebrant,Father.Dennis Dease, Rev. George Cruys and Howard Nelson officiating. Interment was at Fairview Cemetery.
"Her contributions to the civic and religious life of this community will be a living legacy of the life of this remarkable woman," said Rev Cruys

Margaret was born April 28, 1901 to Jacob and Mary Bringgold of Pine Island, Minnesota and graduated from high school there. She came to Lindstrom as a bride of Raymond G. Andrews on June 30, 1927.

Margaret's father Jacob Bringghold served as Pine Island mayort several years and "rebuilt" the city's Security State Bank as president after the Depression. He once said that if he had a son he would send him to law school.
That statement- and her own interest-led Margaret to the University of Minnesota Law School where she graduated in 1926. There were 4 other women in the class.

She went to work at the State Capitol as assistant clerk for the Minnesota Legislature Judiciary Committee. Rep Raymond Andrews, Lindstrom, an attorney served on that committee. "We saw each other every day. It was a whirlwind courtship, " she once said. "He asked me out in April and we were married June 30. We both knew our minds."
Though she had envisioned a career in trial law, the couple went into general practice in Lindstrom shortly afterward, they began to raise their family of children. Her husband later developed a heart condition and died in 1957 after a lingering illness. Their daughter Virginia Louise passed away at the age of 4 1/2 in 1936 from scarlet fever.

In 1946, Margaret Andrews was named Republican state secretary for Minnesota,a position she held until 1953. That year Gov C. Elmer Anderson appointed her state law librarian,a post she held until her retirement in 1975.

While she was a pioneer in her profession, Margaret Andrews also helped foster a number of other firsts in church, school and hospital. The first Catholic vacation school and the first Mass in this area were held in her home.

As a pioneer Catholic and with ecumenicalspirit, she wasa charter member of St. Briget of Sweden Catholic Church, Lindstrom, its first organist and choir director. The first Catholic baptism in the area was that of Susan (Andrews) Wilson, her daughter.She also was first president of the Lindstrom-Center City School PTA. She drew up the by-laws for a new clinic in this community.
She is listed in Who's Who in America and Who's Who of American Women. She was named Business Woman of 1970 by the St. Paul Business and Professional Women's Association.

Margaret Andrews was involves in several civic activities, including President of Chisago Lakes Hospital Auxilary and prsident of the LindstromPublic Library Board for 50 years. While in that position, she was one of those instrumental in the library becoming a brnch of East Central Regional Library.

She also served as Parliamentarian for the Minnesota State Hospital Auxiliary and Minnesota American Legion Hospital Association; was a member of American Legion Auxiliary Unit 83 and past 10th District President; Minnesota State Bar Association, American Association of Law Libraries including Minn. chapter; National Association of Parlimentarians, National Council of Catholic Women and Alpha Delta Pi social and Kappa Beta Pi legal sororities.
In 1979, she received the first "Todays Woman" award given by the Chisago Lakes Jaycee Women. In her acceptance remarks then, she said that while she may have been born a generation to early, she never felt discrimination from male colleagues.

During retirement ceremonies on Dec 31, 1975, she received a plague from Gov. Wendell Anderson which reads, "In recognition of her Outstanding Professional Knowledge, Skill and Dedication and in Gratitude for her Gentle Graciousness and Charm,Wendell R. Anderson Governor,,,"

Margaret is survived by daughters Mary Ellen Anderson(Robert deceased), Fridley; Susan Margaret (Robert, ) Wilson, Lindstrom; her son Charles Bringgold (Mary) Andrews, a Minneapolis attorney; 12 grandchildren .
Margaret Susanna Andrews now rests, as a fourth generationof Andrews family in Lindstrom, in the family plot beneath the only oak tree in Fairview Cemetery.
