Mr. Carlton Camillas Whitworth, 90, beloved patriarch of his family, passed away peacefully at his home in Laredo, July 27, 2010. He was born December 29, 1919 in Corpus Christi, Texas. He was born into a South Texas pioneer family who first arrived in 1835 while Texas was still part of Mexico.

Carlton graduated from Corpus Christi College Academy and attended Del Mar College. In 1940 he married the love of his life, Lejeune Belton Golden.

At the outbreak of WWII he joined the U.S. Army Air Corps and after pilot training was commissioned a second lieutenant. He served as an instructor pilot before being sent overseas where he flew a C 47 troop carrier in the European Theater and attained the rank of Captain. After WWII, he returned to Corpus Christi and resumed working for Central Power and Light Company. After several promotions he was transferred to Laredo in 1954, where he eventually became District Manager. In 1983, forty three years after joining CPL, he retired in Laredo. During Carlton's lifetime he was an active member, officer and director of many wide ranging civic organizations. Among them were the Texas Industrial Development Council, Laredo Development Foundation, South Texas Chamber of Commerce, Laredo Chamber of Commerce, Los Caballeros de la Republica del Rio Grande, Kiwanis Club and the Rotary Club.

He was a founder and one of the initial board members of Laredo International Fair and Exposition (L.I.F.E.). During the 1963 Washington Birthday celebration he portrayed George Washington and in 1972 he served as President of the Washington Birthday Association. His passion was the creation of jobs through the industrial development of South Texas. He studied the subject at Texas A&M University and The University of Oklahoma. He was the inaugural chairman of The Laredo Industrial Development Council and he helped attract many industries to Laredo including the Uniroyal Test Track. In recognition of his contributions to Laredo through his industrial development activity, he was named The Laredo Times Man of the Year in 1960.

He was well known for his wit and sense of humor and for the timing of his jokes which were almost always related to whatever subject was being discussed at the moment.

He genuinely loved people and his greatest wealth was in the many lifelong friends he and Lejeune made over the course of his lifetime.

He was preceded in death by his parents Wyatt Avery and Dora Bell Priour Whitworth and his brothers Wyatt, Jr., Wallace, Bernard, William and Julian.

He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Lejeune Golden Whitworth: his sons James Carlton (Sylvia) of Corpus Christi; Charles Edward (Diane) and Stephen Avery (Alice) of Laredo; grandchildren Camille Lejeune Whitworth of Chicago; David Carlton Whitworth (Courtney) of Austin; Ashley Gonzalez (Adionicio) of Northville, Michigan; Amy Freedman (Todd) of San Antonio; Anne Downing (Ward) of Austin; and Elizabeth Whitworth and fiancé Joe Mussoline of Washington, D.C.; great-grandchildren, Parker and Paige Whitworth; Alessandro, Marcello and Patricio Gonzalez; Riley Freedman; Avery and Frederick Downing. He is also survived by his sister Ann Whitworth Johnson of Corpus Christi, and sisters-in-law Bernice Whitworth of Corpus Christi and Doris Whitworth of Calallen and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to thank his friend and physician, Dr. Joaquin G. Cigarroa, Jr., whose dedication to his profession and his patient was a source of strength and comfort to us.

In lieu of flowers the family asked that you make a donation to the charity of your choice.

The family also wishes to thank Olivia Villanueva, Martha Ortiz, and Lupita Gonzalez, Dr. Leo Cigarroa and the employees of Global Nursing and Laredo Home Health and Hospice for the professional care they provided during his time of need.
