Mrs. Mays was a graduate of Colegrove High School and the Bradford Hospital School of Nursing, class of 1943. On February 5, 1944 in Bradford she married Raymond L. Mays who proceded her in death on October 4, 1996.
She worked as nurse for the Bradford Hospital, Bovaird & Seyfang, and retired from W.R. Case and Sons in 1986. She also worked part time as a school nurse in the Bradford Area School District. She had the distinction of being the first plant nurse in Bradford when she was hired by Bovaird and Seyfang.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church, and the Bradford Hospital School of Nursing Alumnae Group. Her volunteer work included: the Food Bank, Friendship Table, Bradford Ecumenical Home, American Red Cross, and the McKean County Retired and Senior Volunteer Program.
Surviving are two sons: Jerome "Jerry" (Christine) Mays, and Randy (Jo) Mays, four sisters: Leila Shonts, Charlotte Dean, Martha Oxentine, Philinda Scott, a brother, Gilbert Herzog, four grandchildren: Bryan Mays, Karyn Christenson, Tammy Barnaba and Jody Mays, 4 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and three sisters: Rena Vicere, Cinderella Taylor and Hazel Smith.
