Motor Machinist's Mate First Class Allen was killed, along with all hands, onboard the American submarine USS Pompano (SS-181) on or about August 29, 1943. The USS Popano probably struck a mine and sank off the northeast coast of Honshu, Japan. She had left Midway, on her seventh war patrol, August 20, 1943.

Don's mother, Mrs. Margaret Amelia Allen, was living in Fair Oaks Villa, Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, at the time of his death.
