In the sudden death of Col. Archibald Hutcheson at his home in Mt. Vernon Tuesday, a prominent figure in Montgomery county affairs has been removed. For more than 40 years he had filled positions of trust and had part in bussiness affairs in which he was a success and an outstanding example of thrift and energy.

For several years he had successfully undergone attacks of illness and actively resumed his affairs. His death Tuesday evening 7:30 was the result of a heart attack.

Coming to Montgomery County as a teacher at Mt. Vernon, he later practiced law for several years. Chosen county school commissioner, he filled this office with credit for thirty years. He served as a member of the Board of Commissioners of Roads and Revenues, as as clerk of that body, for several terms, was Mayor of Mt. Vernon, chairman of the county executive committee.

One of the original trustees of Brewton-Parker Junior College (Dr. Palmer being the other), he devoted much time and effort to the success of the institution. He held high rank as an authority of educational matters in the State. Retiring from public life, he had in recent years devoted practically all of his time to his farming interests.

Col Hutcheson is survived by his wife, who before a former marriage, was Miss Crawford Vinson of Milledgeville; a daughter, Mrs. L.L. Trippe of Pelham, and a step-daughter, Mrs. J.E. Hall of Soperton; one brother, Noah Hutcheson of Treutlen county, and a sister, Mrs. Besley of Treutlen county.

Funeral services were held from Brewton-Parker Junior College auditorium this morning. The assembly hall was beautifully arranged for the ocassion. The service was conducted by Rev. R.L. Robinson, of Mt. Vernon Baptist church, assisted by Rev. J.D. Rabun of Lyons Baptist church and Rev. George F. Erwin of t. Vernon Methodist church.

During the service Miss Anna Morrison sang "No Night There" and "Saved By Grace." Mr. Erwin read the Scripture, Mr. Robinson delivered the prayer and Mr. Rabun gave a beautiful summary of Mr. Hutcheson's church and public activity - a charter member of Mt. Vernon Baptist church, long service in school work, president of the board of trustees of Brewton-Parker, and of his public life - doubtless longer than that of any man who ever served Montgomery county and covering a period of 40 years.

Native of northern Montgomery county, Mr. Hutcheson was son of the late Mr. & Mrs. Charles Hutcheson. His school days were spent in Johnson county.

Active pallbearers were G.C. Smith, R.W. Peterson, W.C. McRae, W.B. Morrison, Ben Conner and H.V. Thompson. A large list of honary pallbearers was drawn from Mt. Vernon, Ailey and other points. Remains were interred in the Mt. Vernon cemetery.
