Huff was the head football coach at the University of Illinois from 1895 to 1899, compiling a record of 21–16–3, and served as their baseball coach for 24 years. He died from uremia following surgery to remove a stomach obstruction. His grave marker is lined up with the 50 yard line of the University of Illinois's football field at Memorial Stadium.
