Royden L. Garland, 78, of North Olmsted, passed away unexpectedly Thursday, October 16, 2008 at Fairview Hospital. He was born January 15, 1930 in Seneca County to the late John R. and Florence (nee Sherman) Garland of Republic.
Roy was a dedicated school administrator and teacher, retiring from Ohio public education in 1982 after serving as superintendent of Hardin Northern Schools for six years and as principal at Columbia (Station) High School for 10 years. He began his public education career in 1954 at Berlin Heights High School as a history teacher and coach, later becoming the principal there. Prior to that, Roy served two years as a teacher in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and earned the rank of Sergeant. He was the part time Executive Director of the North Olmsted Chamber of Commerce for 20 years, retiring in 2005.
Roy received his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in education from Bowling Green State University, where he joined the Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity. He had a lifetime membership in the Phi Delta Kappa International professional educational organization.
Roy was a life member of Kiwanis International, holding past positions as President of North Olmsted, Columbia Station and Berlin Heights Kiwanis Clubs, Lieutenant Governor for District 14 and as Treasurer for the Ohio District. He was a founding member of the Word Warriors of Westlake Toastmasters Club and the Westlake Advanced Toastmasters Club, achieving the honor of Advanced Toastmaster. Roy had volunteered in the Youth Leadership program for high school students and in the Help on Wheels program to drive cancer patients to medical appointments.
Roy was a dedicated member of the North Olmsted United Methodist Church, a founding trustee of the North Olmsted City Schools Education Foundation and the chair of the North Olmsted Cultural Activities Commission.
He is survived by and will be dearly missed by his children, Jennifer (Les) Riedl of Atlanta, Georgia, Connie (Lary) Kocher of Houston, Texas, Randy Parker of Wichita, Kansas and Mark (Mary) Garland of Columbus; grandchildren, Peter and Matthew Reidl, Brandon and Adrienne Kocher, Joseph and Jenny Parker, Alaina Garland, Julie (Leonard) Meyer and Krista (Leonard) Fry and Bettina, Christopher and Christian Garland; and many other relatives, devoted friends and neighbors.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wives, Phyllis (Stanley Parker) Garland in 1984 and Marilyn (Leak) Garland in 1962; sister, Lois Byers in 1963; and his daughter-in-law, Susan Parker in 2006.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 P.M. Thursday, October 23, 2008 at Kacirek Funeral Home, 29150 Lorain Rd., North Olmsted. Funeral service will be held at 1 P.M. Friday, October 24, 2008 at North Olmsted United Methodist Church, 4600 Dover Center Rd. Interment will be at Columbia Township Cemetery.
