HANTZEL, D. ARNETT, SR.- Age 84, of Cement City, passed away on Sunday, June 28, 2009 at his home. He was born on September 9, 1924 in Woodstock Township, Lenawee County, MI to Clarence O. and Hazel A. (Reeser) Arnett. He married Charlene M. Bernstein on February 16, 1946 in Columbia Township, Jackson County, MI, and she survives. Hantzel lived in the Cement City area all his life. He attended Cement City Schools. He was employed at the former General Portland Cement Company of Cement City for 38 years and also in Paulding, OH where he was a foreman. He then worked at the State of Michigan Department of Natural Resources as a work camp superintendent, and then he worked at Michigan International Speedway for eight years in maintenance. He also worked at the Cement City Department of Public Works. Hantzel was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Air Force from 1942-1946 in the Pacific Theater as crew chief onairplanes. He was 1st Commander of the V.F.W. Post #9453 of Cement City. He was also a member of the Cement City Fire Department. He attended the Cement City Baptist Church. He enjoyed woodworking, and also enjoyed going up north to their cabin. He was a wonderful grandfather and great-grandfather. Surviving besides his wife, Carlene are two daughters, Sandy (Chris) Rowland of Cement City, Carolyn (Karl) Basnaw of Horton; one son, Rod (Deanna) Arnett of Brooklyn; seven grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; one sister, Mary Warschefsky of Cement City; one brother, Donald (Rosemary) Arnett of Adrian; several nephews, nieces and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Hantzel D. Arnett II; two brothers, Lafe and Paul Arnett; and one sister, Grace Flint. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 1, 2009 at the Brown-Van Hemert Funeral Home in Addison, with Pastor Drew Woods officiating. Burial will take place in East Liberty Cemetery, Liberty Township, Jackson County, MI.
