Mitchell was the son of Korleen Evans and Kevin Vaus. He graduated from Bonneville High School and was attending a Community College in Salt Lake City at the time of his death, seeking to get a degree in Culinary Arts.

The following is a poem written by his aunt in his honor

In God's Kitchen

I'm in God's Kitchen
Waiting for you
Don't worry about me
There's plenty to do.

I'll be busy
Until you arrive
Then I'll show you God's Kitchen
And all Paradise.

I'll share all the sunsets
The mountains and streams
I promise everything here
Is better than dreams.

I've learned some things that happen
Are just meant to be
Please don't despair over
What happened to me.

There are no answers
Your heart will understand
All I can tell you
Is that its part of the plan.

I know you miss me
And I really miss you
But I'm in God's Kitchen
And there's plenty to do.
