His parents were William and Mary Johnson. He married Priscilla Kersey, daughter of George B. Kersey and Eliza Council, on 14 December 1858, in Willow Grove (near Dover), Delaware. They had seven children, all of them born in Wyoming, Delaware: Eliza "Jennie" Johnson (31 August 1859-5 July 1919), Mary Elizabeth Johnson (born 19 March 1861), George E. Johnson (born 10 March 1866), Charles A. Johnson (born 4 January 1868), Thomas Johnson (born August 1869), Edgar E. Johnson (born 27 Dec 1871), and Henry B. Johnson (born 26 May 1876). Darling was named for his maternal grandmother, and during the Civil War, served in the Union Army, Company F, 4th Delaware Volunteer Infantry, where he rose to the rank of Corporal. At the Battle of Petersburg, Virginia, in June 1864, he was wounded in the foot. After the war, he returned to farming for his living, and later worked as a carpenter.
