He graduated from Union College, 1813 and Princeton Theological Seminary, 1819; married 1st Harriet Selden; 2d Esther Williams; 3d Lucy Merriman. He is listed in the Sons of the Revolution. He founded the Oneida Institute in Whitesboro NY 1827, one of the earliest and most widely known of the 'manual labor' schools. In 1834, he became interested in establishing a manual labor college in the West (the Old Northwest Territory). In January 1835, New School Presbyterian and Congregational clergymen and laymen in central and eastern New York became intsted in Gale's reports. A purchasing committee was sent West and bought about 10,000 acres in Knox County IL. The Knox Manual Labor College was founded in 1837; the manual labor feature was later changed and the institution became Knox College. George served as trustee and taught literature and moral philosophy there until his retirement in 1857.
