DEATH OF S. H. SHEPHERD YESTERDAY MORNING.

S. H. Shepherd, one of the veteran newspaper men of the northwest, passed away at his home in South Boise at 7 a.m. yesterday. His death was not unexpected. He had suffered a long time from tuberculosis of the bowels. He was at the Sanitarium for some time. When the announcement was made that he could not live he asked to be moved back to the old home, that he might die under its roof and amid surroundings familiar and dear.

The funeral will be held from the Methodist church today at 2 p.m. Interment will be in Morris Hill.

The deceased was 56 years of age. He was born in Keosauqua, Iowa. When 21 years of age he went west, locating in Oregon. He and an uncle founded the Bedrock Democrat, at Baker City, now the Baker City Democrat. Later Mr. Shepherd founded the Grant County News at Canyon City, Oregon. He then returned to Iowa, where he started a paper, the Democrat, at Corydan. He longed for the west, however, and soon returned, going to Vale, where he founded the Malheur Gazette.

Several years ago he moved to Boise, establishing the Boise Mail. A little later he left the newspaper business and engaged in farming.

The deceased was an Odd Fellow and a Knights of Pythias.
