Captain Allyn died in Depoe Bay at 79
DEPOE BAY - CHarterboat pioneer and coastal author Stanley "Stan" Richard Allyn died Monday in his Depoe Bay home of heart problems. He was 79.
Captain Allyn began Depoe Bay's charterfishing industry when he brought his boat "The Tradewinds Kingfisher," to the coastal village in 1938. Even since, clad in his navy blue suit and captain's hat, he was a well-known figure on the central Oregon coast.
"He was Mr. Depoe Bay," said longtime friend Gracie Strom. "He got more joy and he gave more joy than almost anybody I can think of. He was always a very important part of Depoe Bay history."
In 1987, Depoe Bay held Stan Allyn Recognition Day, and dedicated a bronze plaque to its most famous resident for his efforts on behalf of coastal tourism. In 1991, his boat, the Kingfisher turned 50 and was made a National Historic Monument.
Captain Allyn was born in Portland on Jan. 16, 1913. He moved to Depoe Bay in 1938, and when World War II broke out, he and the Kingfisher joined the U.S. Coast Guard.
They served together in the South Pacific and Atlantic before returning to Depoe Bay, where Captain Allyn operated Tradewinds Charters. He retired in 1986 and turned the boats and the business over to his son, Richard.
Captain Allyn is the author of three books of sea stories, "Heave to! You'll Drown Yourselves," "Top Deck Twenty! Best West Coast Sea Stories," and "The Day the Sun Didn't Rise!"
He was a life member of the Masonic Lodge 200 in Lincoln City, and a member of the Pacific Sea Chapter of the Lions Club in Depoe Bay.
Survivors besides his son, Richard of Depoe Bay, include his daughters, Beverly Kunz of Winlock, Wash., and Linda Hall of Seattle; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday in the Bateman Funeral Home in Newport. Private internment will be in Riverview Cemetery in Portland.
The family suggests that remembrances be contributions to the Pacific Sea Chapter of the Lions Club in Depoe Bay, in care of Bateman Funeral Home.
