His father, John, served in the Rev War as a Captain; War of 1812 militia volunteer; came to Knox Co IL 1836 from Addison Co VT; was the 2d merchant in Galesburg. His store stood on the northeast corner of the public square and Main Street, but he did not occupy it until 1840, starting a business in Knoxville. His store was used as a school and church until the academy was built at the corner of Main and Cherry Street. The first meeting of the trustees of Knox College after incorporating was held in Chambers' Knoxville store. He was a Knox College Trustee.
