Loving husband, father, grandfather, brother. He made great toast... the bread and butter kind in a toaster oven. He was proud to be a Texan, which made me proud to be the granddaughter of a Texan. We could BBQ!
Clarence Phillip Gyger was born July 10, 1906 in Palo Pinto County, Texas the first son to Charles and Nannie Bell (Snow) Gyger. He had two younger brothers, Altie James "AJ" and Marion. He was always fond of his brothers and their families through the years.
My grandparents grew up in the same area of Texas. There were two very large families. The widower and the widow of each of these families married each other, and that's where things get muddled. Go to Grandma Vina's memorial to understand it better.
Clarence Phillip Gyger, known as "C.P." and "Pat" Wimberley married March 4. Together they raised eight children, two boys and six girls. Their home was were all their friends would come to hang out for fun. CP and Pat moved to Martinez, CA in the early 50s; following their son Charlie "Sonny" and brother-in-law John Morris to work in the oil refinery business. Their two eldest daughters, Tommie Lee Allen and Jimmie Rene Pennington remained in Houston with their husbands. Henry and Dolly Wimberley and Dorris Morris and her children were all with Pat and CP in Martinez. Clarence found a job at one of the oil refineries, with a little help from his brother AJ and "Claude" Gyger, papa's doppelgänger, to pass a pre-employment physical. Nita and Pat graduated Alhambra High before the family moved to a larger home in Concord on Clayton Rd. While he was still a working man, Clarence was a custodian at Kaiser Hospital in Walnut Creek. A hospital has to be kept sanitary for the sake of the patients well being, so a custodian MUST be an important job, right? Well to me it was. People at Kaiser liked "Clarence." He retired from Kaiser Hospital.
In 1972, Clarence, Pat and Nita moved nextdoor to me on Nulty Dr. I was so lucky to have my grandparents and favorite aunt (2nd mom) and cousin (like a little sister) next door.
People at home loved Clarence. I knew him as my grandpa and he was always very kind to me. Never raised his voice at me or my siblings, or cousins that I know of.
Clarence was preceded in death by three grandchildren Karen Allen, Stephen Pennington, and Melinda Stanley; his parents Charles P. and Nannie Bell Gyger, and brother AJ Gyger of Waller County, Texas. He is survived by his wife Blanche "Pat" Gyger of Concord, CA; children Tommie Allen (Jake) of Houston, Charles R. Gyger (Mary Lou) of Hemphill, TX, John Henry Gyger of Harris County, TX, Jimmie Pennington (Dale) Hemphill, TX, Juanita C. Gyger of Concord, Patricia Stanley (Charles) of Concord, Deanna Gooden (John) of Vacaville, CA, and Sharon Kay Eddy (Ralph) of Clyde, CA; Granddaughter Anita Dalton raised in the home, 12 add'l grandchildren and growing, two step-grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren and growing, and two step-grandchildren; Brother Marion Gyger (Verna) of Texas; Sister-in-law "Tommie" Gyger of Texas;
Mother-in-law Naomi Dolly Wimberley of Martinez; Sister-in-law Doris Morris (John) of Martinez; Brothers-in-law "Woody" Wimberley (Nola) of Willits, CA, and Wm. Leo Wimberley; Nephews Edwin "Bubba" Gyger of Houston, Don Morris (Kathy) and Bill Morris (Shirley); Nieces Shirley Joyce (Gyger) Roberds (J.B.) of Houston, Jan Morris, Carolyn Joan Gonderman (Ken), Gwendolyn Underhill, Lorraine (Wimberley), and Deanza Ward (Herman) of Huson, CA.
