Joanna's parents died during the Swine Flu epidemic of 1918. She and her brother Leslie were later adopted by their maternal aunt, Ruth Fulmer and her husband, Harold Damman.
She married Norman Barnard and was the mother of three sons and one daughter. She and Norman were married 54 years before her death at the age of 75.
She was a member of the Vandalia United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women's organization, was active in Garden and Civic Clubs and was a member of AAUW. Funeral servicces were held on feburary 10, 1993, at the Vandalia United Methodist Church with Rev. Ronald L. Foulk officiating. Joanna was buried at Evergreen Memorial Cemetery in Seattle.
