In 1930 he and his parents and two siblings lived in a house they owned on Main Street in Ocheyedan, IA. Their home was valued at $5000, and they did have a radio. His father worked as a medical physician.

In 1940 he and his parents and brother lived in a house they owned in Ocheyedan. This seems to have been a different house, as it was valued at $2500, and houses in Iowa mostly didn't lose so much value through the Great Depression. His father worked as a surgeon in private practice, and his brother as a photographer with his own studio.
