S/Sgt. Walter J. Mahr was an Illinois National Guardsman, from Maywood, Illinois, called to federal service as a member of B Company, 192nd Tank Battalion. At Ft. Knox, he was transferred to Hq Company when the company was created. He served in the Philippine Islands during the first battles of World War II involving American tanks. Mahr became a Prisoner of War when Bataan was surrendered to the Japanese on April 9, 1942. As a POW he took part in the death march and was held at Camp O'Donnell and Cabanatuan. He died of malaria at Cabanatuan. His cross at the American Military Cemetery at Manila, inaccurately shows him as a member of the 194th Tank Battalion.
