Robert B. Hall
April 7, 1948 – July 10, 2010

Robert B. Hall, who spent time throughout his life in Wallowa County and retired here, died in French Polynesia on a trip of a lifetime at age 62.

Bob was born to Oregonians William O. and Jayne Bowerman Hall in Washington, D.C.  As the son of a career U.S. State Department officer, Bob grew up on the east coast and overseas.

Because of the family's frequent moves, Bob spent each summer at the family ranch, established by his grandfather [Oregon Governor] Jay Bowerman, in Joseph.  He attended school in Joseph for one year while living with his aunt and uncle, Sally and Dick Rathbun, and formed even deeper ties to Wallowa County which  became an anchor throughout his adult life.

He returned to the Joseph ranch as often as his many moves and career allowed, and he eventually chose to retire in Wallowa County.

Shortly after graduating from college, Bob joined the U.S. Navy reserves as a "Seabee." He began a career with the Department of State in 1972 as a Foreign Service officer serving in the Middle East and Austria.

He later became an assistant press secretary and spokesman during the Reagan and George H.W. Bush administrations. During the last three years of the first Bush administration, he became deputy Pentagon spokesman. He stayed on into the Clinton years and completed his career working as senior special assistant to the Secretary of Defense and finally as Defense Advisor with the US Mission to NATO Brussels.

On retiring, Bob returned to Wallowa County where he had lived for the past nine years.

He enjoyed spending time and fishing on the Imnaha River, and participated in many county activities, most notably Fishtrap.

He also continued to enjoy travel, friends and family all over the world.

Bob died during one of his most anticipated adventures and a trip of a life time, sailing with old friends in French Polynesia on July 10, 2010, one day before the solar eclipse he had hoped to see.

He is survived by his sister Sally Hall Sternglanz (Rolf) of New York;  his nephew  Weylin Sternglanz (Sarah) of Florida; nephew Seth Sternglanz of  San Francisco; his brother Bill Hall (Marty) of Portland; his cousins  Wendy  McCullough of Joseph, Carol Chrisman (Paul) of Sacramento, and  by the Joseph family of his late cousin, Mary DeBoie.

A memorial celebration of life is planned for Sept. 11 in Portland. An informal gathering of friends to remember Bob in Wallowa County will be planned for a later date.

The family wishes to honor Bob's request that any remembrances benefit the Fishtrap writer's workshops (Fishtrap Inc. P.O. Box 38, Enterprise, OR 97828) or the Wallowa County Museum (P. O. Box 430, Joseph OR 97846).
