Donald served as a Staff Sergeant & Engineer on B-29A "Take It Off" #42-93939, 40th Bomber Squadron, 6th Bomber Group, Very Heavy, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Jefferson County, Kentucky prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on September 15, 1941, prior to the war, at Fort Thomas, Newport, Kentucky. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Carpenter and also as Single, without dependents.

B-29A #42-93939 took off from Tinian, Mariana Islands to lay mines in the Shimonoseki Straits, Japan. After laying their mines they were attacked by ground anti-aircraft fire and a Japanese night fighter which caused them to crash into the sea during the war.

Donald was declared Missing In Action" during the war.

He was awarded an Air Medal and a Purple Heart.
