Upon takeoff from a base in China, U.S. Army Air Corps B-29-30-BW Superfortress
#42-24494 "Mary Ann" experienced a runaway propeller and the pilot attempted an
emergency landing. Due to the heavy bomb load, the aircraft overshot the runway.
The pilot attempted to eject the bombs from an elevation of 250 feet but several
exploded and damaged the bomber. The crew bailed out but 1st Lieutenant Irby and
three others were killed due to being too close to the ground and their
parachutes failed to open in time.
