Henry Duncan, Graaf Bentinck, was the son of Henry Charles Adolphus Frederick William, Graaf Aldenburg-Bentinck, and his wife, Henrietta Eliza Cathcart McKerrell. He was a member of a prominent Anglo-Dutch family descended from a younger son of Willem Bentinck, 1st Earl of Portland. His branch of the family had been granted the title of Count of the Holy Roman Empire and they were granted permission from Queen Victoria to use their title within the United Kingdom.
