Herman Frasch, a 3803 gross ton (9000 tons displacement) bulk cargo carrier, was built in 1910 at Quincy, Massachusetts, to carry sulphur for the Union Sulpher Co. (of which Frasch was president). A similar ship, Frieda, was built two years later for the same purpose. Herman Frasch was commissioned at New York in September 1918 as USS Herman Frasch (ID # 1617).
On 1 October Herman Frasch sailed from New York for Sidney, Nova Scotia, where she was to join a convoy that was to depart for Europe on 7 October. Shortly after midnight on 4 October USS Herman Frasch collided off the Nova Scotia coast with the tanker USS George G. Henry (ID # 1560) and sank in seven minutes.
