First Lieutenant Ray Phillip Saffold died from wounds received in action, Aisne-Marne Offensive, World War I, in Paris. He was a part of the 28th Infantry, called up from the rear on July 22, 1918, shot the same day. Died at 4:45 a.m. from edema of the lungs following gunshot wound received in action.

Lt. Ray Saffold, of the well known Alabama Saffold family, is not a relative of mine, but the creator of this memorial transferred it to me because we were researching the Saffold family to find where my cousin is, and suggested a correction to this memorial when we found it. My cousin, Oliver Marion Heidt, married Ida Elizabeth (Saffold) Heidt, Lt. Ray Saffold's first cousin. So if anyone who is a blood relation to the Saffold family finds this memorial and you are researching the family line, please let us know and we will gladly transfer this memorial to you.
