Samuel Franklin Hawkins was born in Baxter county, Arkansas, March 14, 1857, and departed this life April 9, 1928, at the age of 71 years and 24 days. Funeral services were held at the Baptist church at Alfalfa at 3 p.m. and he was laid to rest in the Alfalfa cemetery. Rev. Caldwell and Rev. Ira Hollis conducted the funeral.
Mr. Hawkins was one of the pioneers of the country, having settled on a farm six miles northeast of Mountain View at the opening of the country, 32 year ago. He has been in ill health for the past six months and bore his suffering with match patience.
On December 31, 1878, he was married to Irene Marshal Harris and in this union three children were born. After the death of his wife he was united in marriage to Mrs. J.D. Graves on Sept. 1, 1889 and to this union three children were born. He is survived by his six children, Mrs. Mollie House, Carnegie; Walter and William Hawkins, Mountain View; B.F. Hawkins, Oklahoma City; Mrs. Bertha Russell, Kansas City, Mo., and Mrs. Laura McCroskey, Altus. Also his step-children, T.L. Graves Carnegie; Jas. Graves, Verden; Mrs. Clara Kuykendall, Cloud Chief; and Mrs. Georgia Dirkson, Wichita Falls, Texas, a number of grandchildren, Great- Grandchildren and by three brothers. All of the children except one daughter were present at the time of his death.
Mr. Hawkins was loved by all who knew him. His great kindness, his absolute uprightness and the beauty of his character combined to make him one of the most highly esteemed citizens of the community. The memory of his life will never cease to be an inspiration to surviving relatives and friends.
