PARENTS: Orlando E. Rose & Malinda "Lindy" Nail.

Orlando, b. 8 Dec. 1849, Virgil, Kane Co., Ill; d. 18 Nov. 1923, Jackson Co., Oregon.

PATERNAL GRANDPARENTS: Charles Rose & Sarah Ann Cougle. Sometimes "Cougle" is spelled "Kougle".

Charles m. Sarah Ann 28 June 1847, Kane Co., Illinois.



Fred's mother was Malinda "Lindy" Nail Rose. There is some confusion about her middle name. Some have it as "Emma" but "Emma" Nail was her sister.

Sarah's mother Katharyn Kougle (45 yrs, b. 1805 NJ) & other children reside next door to Charles & Sarah. And right beside Charles & Sarah lives Royal & Mary Cougle Benedict. Note that Katharyn appears to be a widow. The children remaining home with her were born in New York, Ohio, PA, & Illinois.

Fred's father, Orlando Rose, came to Oregon in 1859 with his uncle Rial (Royal) Benedict (Rial's 2nd trip to Oregon). Rial opened a "stopping place" in the area north of Applegate. Orlando rode a horse for the whole trip.

Note that Rial Benedict m. Mary Jane Cougle 1 January 1845, Kane Co., Illinois. His wife & Orlando's mother (Fred's paternal grandmother) were sisters.

Orlando Rose m. Malinda Nail 13 December 1871, Josephine Co., Oregon.

During the early years of their marriage, they operated a dance hall, "Rose Hall" on property originally owned by his Uncle Rial Benedict on the old Thompson Donation Land Claim at the mouth of Thompson Creek. A midnight supper would be served on the first floor and dancing was enjoyed on the 2nd floor.

Charley is married (in 1899) to Ella Newcomb. She's technically a granddaughter-in-law. Charley is a farm laborer.

McE Colins is married; had 6 children, all living.

Fred is an engineer.

He & Sabrey are buried in the Woodville Cem., Rogue River, Jackson Co., Oregon. Sabrey was his daughter.
