George A. Lance was the fifth of eight children born to Mary B. O'Conner and Henry Lance. He served in Italy during the early part of WW1 with the American Ambulance Field Service with such notables as Ernest Hemingway and Walt Disney, prior to the United States of America entering the war in 1917. At which time, he joined the United States Army. He fought as an infantryman with the 88th Division of the American Expeditionary Force (AEF) in France, earning two overseas stripes (which equals 1 year of service), and received his honorable discharge in 1918. He was married to Lorene L. Hitt on July 29, 1913 in Cape Girardeau County, Missouri and together they had two children. They remained married her untimely death in 1936. He then married his second wife, Ava Hardin, on November 28, 1942 in Crystal City, Jefferson County, Missouri. He died at the age of 62. He was preceded in death by his only son, who was U.S. Marine, killed in action in 1944 during WW2, and survived by his only daughter Margaret M. Lance (Schuh). He was buried on Sept. 9, 1955 with his first wife, next to his son. (bio by: Jay Lance)
