Seaman Wilfred J. Hull was born in West Windsor on April 8, 1922, the son of Leland Jay and Maude Norton Hull. He spent a great part of his life in Windsor, having graduated from the high school here and at the time of his enlistment in the armed forces in October, 1942, he was employed at Cone's shop.

He enlisted in the Navy October 30, 1942 in Springfield, Massachusetts, and received his basic training in Rhode Island. In October 1943 he was serving on the light carrier, U. S. S. Belleau Wood. The ship was proceeding on a mission in the Pacific when one of the planes attached to the carrier crashed on the flight deck. Hull rushed to the aid of the pilot, but before he could reach him the plane burst into flames and Hull was fatally burned. According to his hometown newspaper, the Vermont Journal, Seaman 2/c was posthumously awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Medal for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy.

Memorial services were held at the Old South church on Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock for Wilfred J. Hull, Seaman Second Class of the U. S. Navy, who has been reported dead as a result of wounds.

A picture of Seaman Hull was placed in front of the altar and was surrounded by flowers in tribute to his memory. The service was conducted by Rev. Howard Paige.

A representation of the American Legion, The Vermont State Guard and a group from Seaman Hull's class at the high school were in attendance at the service. There were also several members of the armed forces on furlough in Windsor who attended.

Surviving besides his parents, who now reside in South Pomfret, are three brothers, Raymond of Windsor, Maurice and Reginald of South Pomfret, and two sisters, Mrs. Lawrence Clay of West Hartford and Miss Verna Hull of South Pomfret.
