Walter served as a Second Lieutenant, Company C, 2nd Battalion, 6th Infantry Regiment, 1st Armored Division, U.S. Army during World War II.

He resided in Jefferson County, Texas & was a member of the Texas National Guard prior to the war.

His National Guard unit was called into full time active Army service on November 25, 1940, prior to the war, from Beaumont, Texas. He was noted, at that time, as being Single, without dependents.

Walter was declared "Missing In Action" in what was known as the Bari Bombing Disaster in Bari, Italy during the war. The Bari Port was attacked by German Ju-88 bombers causing massive explosions while the ships were unloading supplies.

He was awarded the "Bronze Star" and the Purple Heart.
