Leona served as a Private First Class in the Women's Army Corps, and was a passenger on C-47B #44-76406, 1202nd Air Air Force Base Unit, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

She resided in Cook County, Illinois prior to the war.

She enlisted in the Women's Army Corps on April 5, 1944 in Chicago, Illinois. She was noted, at the time of her enlistment, as being employed as a Machinist and also as Single, without dependents.

C-47B #44-76406 took off, with a crew of 3 and 18 passengers, from Accra, Ghana on a transport mission to Robert's Field, Liberia. For an unknown reason "Mayday's" were heard from the C-47. They disappeared and are believed to have crashed into the sea near Takordi, Ghana. All 21 on board were lost.

Leona was declared "Missing In Action" on this flight during the war.
