James was the son of William J. and Mary L. Crosby of Fernandina Beach, FL. He had younger brother named Everett who was a Marine during the WWII. Both parents and brother are buried at Hughes Cemetery, Nassau County, FL. After leaving South Caroline, the family lived in St. Augustine in 1930 before moving to Nassau County.

James' enlistment documents state that he was 6'1" and 136 lbs, 8th grade education, Branch Immaterial - Warrant Officers, USA. He enlisted at Camp Blanding, FL on 13 Nov 1942

He served in front-line combat with the 60th Infantry 9th Division "Go Devils" in Europe and North Africa. He received the Purple Heart Medal and Bronze Star Medal.

His name is listed 3rd from the top on the US Army panel of the Nassau County War Memorial.
